Content introduction

This book presents the reader with important research on public celebrations and popular culture in Mexico. In 15 essays, scholars from the Americas and the United Kingdom discuss persuasive aspects of Mexican popular culture from the 16th century to the present. They explore a wide range of Mexican expressions, including vulgar songs and dances, festivals, stone frescoes, Corpus Christi celebrations, brass bands, and folk theater. Filling a need that has become increasingly urgent, this timely collection of essays that fills the increasingly urgent need will provide readers with new insights into cultural history, Latin America, anthropology, and other fields of interest.

These studies discuss the complex interaction of public life, political culture, and social order in Mexico since the arrival of Spanish colonists from different perspectives. The authors of this book use multidisciplinary theories and research results, such as Geertz's "theater state" theory, Durkheim's analysis of the religious state, Burkhardt's "The State as a Work of Art", Fuller's study of the French Revolution, etc., to present the overall trend of the development of Mexican popular culture.

In the late 15th century, Spanish settlers arrived in Mexico, bringing with them language and rituals to better govern. After three centuries of development, by the time the colonists left in the 19th century, foreign rituals, languages, and cultures had merged with indigenous historical traditions, giving rise to new folk behaviors and popular cultures. In the post-colonial independent nation states, these cultural activities become the arena of mixed class, gender, belief, domination and struggle, alienation and assimilation. Through an analysis of public celebrations, civil ceremonies, and popular entertainment, the book charts the delicate web of culture and politics that helped to understand Mexico's social transition from colonization to independence and its impact on modern life.
