Film noir is undoubtedly one of the most amorphous categories of film. "Film Noir" was born in Hollywood, but has a romantic French name "Film Noir". In fact, film noir has almost nothing to do with romance. When you think of "film noir," you're most likely to think of stylized, cynical black-and-white Hollywood films of the 1940s and 1950s -- melodramas about private investigators, femme fatales, criminal gangsters, runaway lovebirds. "Film Noir" does not shy away from these films, but James Naremore also points out that the term "film Noir" is far more complex and contradictory than we realize, it is an important legacy of film and an idea that we project into the past.

James Naremore is an American film critic and Emeritus Chancellor's professor at Indiana University, specializing in English literature, film studies, and intercultural communication.
