作者简介
威廉·特雷弗（1928—2016），爱尔兰著名作家，被视为当代英语文坛最杰出的短篇小说家之一。他生于爱尔兰一个中产阶级新教家庭，毕业于都柏林圣三一大学历史系，成为职业作家前，先后做过雕塑家、教师和广告公司文案撰写人。从1954年起，他和妻子移居英国。
特雷弗一生出版近四十部长篇小说、短篇小说集、戏剧以及散文集。他的作品曾五次入围布克奖，四次获得欧·亨利奖，三次获得英国惠特布雷德奖，2008年，他获得爱尔兰图书奖终身成就奖，一度是诺贝文学奖热门人选。
2016年11月，特雷弗病逝于英格兰萨默塞特郡。
Content introduction
The Prisoner of Life, a collection of 12 short stories by William Trevor, explores the emotional limits of ordinary people in Ireland's cities and countryside trapped in a restrained routine, as each is caught, willingly or unknowingly, in a web of fate and desire, where one step back means loss and the next comes with a price. So there seems to be a continuing theme throughout these 12 stories - that everyone is a prisoner of life.
Whether it is the poor couple who is fooled by the gold owner but grateful for the shackles, or the Bohemian son who is burdened with the past and refuses to be influenced by money; Whether it is the female painter who has been imprisoned by the illusion for a lifetime, quietly burying his first love in ignorance, or the parasitic father who takes advantage of the world's sunny and warm, and considers himself a beneagent, in the process of tracing the source of every pain of the characters in the book, readers will find that every iceberg in the world is a flame, and every gentle eye can shoot a bullet.

About the author
William Trevor (1928-2016) was an Irish writer who is regarded as one of the most outstanding short stories in contemporary English literature. Born into a middle-class Protestant family in Ireland, he graduated in history from Trinity University Dublin and worked as a sculptor, teacher and copywriter for an advertising agency before becoming a professional writer. From 1954, he and his wife moved to England.
Trevor published nearly forty novels, short story collections, plays, and essays. His work has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times, won the O Henry Prize four times, won the British Whitbread Prize three times, won the Irish Book Award for Lifetime achievement in 2008, and was once a favourite for the Nobel Prize.
In November 2016, Trevor died in Somerset, England.
