Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936), writing under the name M.R. James, English writer and medieval scholar. Born in Kent, England, graduated from the University of Cambridge, has served as the provost of King's College Cambridge and Eton College, with his creation of a series of spiritual well-known in Europe and the United States. He raised the art of western supernatural fiction to a new height and profoundly influenced many later popular novelists. The famous modern horror novelist Lovecraft praised him as "the greatest master of surrealist fiction."
