The book revolves around a central question: What explains the execution of hundreds of thousands of "witches" in early modern Europe? Why did the rise of capitalism coincide with the war on women? The book is divided into five sections: the daily struggles of peasants and workers before the 15th century; The impact of land privatization and expansionary population policies; The rise of the mechanical view of the body; Mass witch hunts in continental Europe; The reenactment of witch hunting tactics in the Americas and the counterattack of local women.
Looking back on this 300-year history, Federici shows that the witch hunt is a process of capitalist rationalization of social reproduction, and it provides the necessary support for the two core principles of modern social organization: the ability to work and self-ownership. In other words, the control of women's fertility and bodies (represented by the attack on witches) is a key step in capitalism's original accumulation.
Federici's dialogue with Marx's primitive accumulation theory and Foucault's body theory from a female perspective poses a strong challenge to the traditional historical narrative and theoretical paradigm.
About the author
Silvia Federici (1942 -), Italian scholar, teacher, Marxist feminist and activist, Professor emeritus at Hofstra University in New York State. In addition to this book, Federici is the author of Revolution Zero: Housework, Reproduction, and the Struggle for Feminism (2012), The Fear of Women: Witches, Witch Hunts, and Women (2018), and Beyond the Boundaries of the Body (2020). Federici is also a co-founder of the International Federation of Women's Rights and an organizer of the Domestic Work Wage campaign.
