An important work on the meaning of liberty, this book traces the reinvention of American democracy in the second half of this century, offering both a philosophical argument and a historical argument for the concept of public philosophy. His philosophical claim is that procedural liberalism-a political theory that claims that government should be neutral to competing ideas about the good life-is inadequate: The historical view is that, over the past half-century, procedural liberalism has created a vocabulary for American political discourse that has crowded out republican understandings of citizenship and liberty and has come to dominate as a dominant public philosophy. In Sandel's view, procedural liberalism has gradually replaced civic republicanism, with disastrous consequences for American democracy. Only by reviving the republican tradition, committed to the civic virtues required for community identity and self-government, can the disaffection of American democracy be eliminated.
