作者简介
霍华德·贝克尔（HowardS.Becker），1928年生，美国当代著名社会学家，芝加哥社会学派第二代的代表人物，曾任教于西北大学和华盛顿大学。他在互动论、越轨社会学、艺术社会学、音乐社会学等领域作出了诸多贡献。其成名作《局外人》为标签理论奠定了基础，并为众多犯罪社会学家和越轨社会学家所引用。
The Outsider: A Sociological Study of Deviance
What kind of behavior is normal or abnormal? If you're talking to yourself while gesturing on the street, people may think you're not normal, and when people see your headphones, they may think you're talking on the phone, and they think it's normal. Such situations occur in all corners of society, covering all kinds of groups.
As one of the first sociological classics to apply label theory to explain such phenomena, The Outsider uses "deviance" to discuss the various possibilities of normal or abnormal. Who sets the rules between outsiders and insiders - marijuana users and drug cops, dance musicians and listeners, drivers and traffic cops, students and teachers, thieves and cops? Who is the transgressor or deviant? Who enforces the rules? Who's gonna label it deviant? What are the effects of such labels?
As a former musician, the author uses first-hand conversations or interviews to bring to life the subcultures of various social groups. After a lapse of more than 50 years, the author shares his latest thoughts on the issue of deviance in a new edition.
About the author
Howard Becker (HowardS.Becker), born in 1928, is a famous contemporary American sociologist, a representative of the second generation of the Chicago School of Sociology, and has taught at Northwestern University and the University of Washington. He has made many contributions in the fields of interaction theory, deviant sociology, art sociology, and music sociology. His famous book, The Outsider, laid the foundation for label theory and has been cited by many sociologists of crime and deviance.
