Life and Death on the Migrant Road [Content Introduction]
To the west of the long border between the United States and Mexico is the Sonoran Desert, known as the "barren land", which has long served as a "route" for undocumented immigrants from Latin America. The towering wall ends here, and through the death gates of the desert, immigrants can become part of America's illegal labor force. Only, millions of people died on the way. Anthropologist Jason de Leon has traveled desert migration routes, interviewed border crossers, collected material remains such as clothing and bones, helped the wounded along the way, and witnessed death firsthand. In his view, the desert is a heterogeneous collection carefully created by the US government: inducing immigrants to take risks, outsource dirty work, and use the natural environment to "whitewash" themselves. This dead land is full of the pain of life lost, but behind the huge economic gap between the two worlds and the intractable political disease.
