Introduction to the Industrial Revolution
The "Industrial Revolution", which took place between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries, was a pivotal point in British history and led to profound social change. With the advent of revolutionary manufacturing techniques, productivity increased rapidly, the steam engine became a reliable source of power, and the first railroads supported industrial construction. People moved from agriculture to industry and commerce, and cities grew, but pollution and diseases brought on by crowded conditions also became new problems. Many people lost their jobs because of the new machines. On the other hand, working conditions and wages in the factories were very bad. As the middle class prospered, groups of workers were restive, and the exploitation of workers led to the growth of trade unions and protest movements. This book analyses the main features of the Industrial Revolution in Britain and the process by which industrialization spread to other countries. The authors also focus on changes in technology and business organizations and their impact on different social classes and groups.
About the author
RobertC.Allen is Global Distinguished Professor at New York University ABU Dhabi, Senior Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford, and Fellow of the British Academy of Social Sciences. His research focuses on economic history, technological innovation, and public management strategies. He is the author of the Industrial Revolution in Modern England: A Global Perspective, Enclosures and Homesteaders: Agricultural Development in the South Midlands, 1450-1850.
