作者简介
窦德士（1937—2020），1958年毕业于乔治城大学，1968年获哥伦比亚大学博士学位。曾任美国堪萨斯大学历史学教授、东亚研究中心主任，主要研究方向为元明思想史和政治史。代表作有《嘉靖帝的四季：皇帝与首辅》《重归统一：宋初的战与和》《征服者与儒士：元代后期政治发展面面观》等，还参与了《剑桥中国辽西夏金元史》元朝后期部分的撰写。
陈佳臻，资深英语译者，北京师范大学历史学硕士，中国社会科学院历史学博士，现为中国政法大学法律古籍整理研究所副教授，主要研究方向为宋元明法律制度史，著有《元代刑部研究》等。
"Beyond the Great Wall" content introduction
A history of national security in Ming Dynasty. This book is the representative work of the famous Sinologist Dou Deshi. Based on detailed historical materials, the work tells the history of frontier battles of the Ming Dynasty, and from the perspective of war history, makes an in-depth analysis of the political system, local management and military thought of the Ming Dynasty. This book divides the history of the northern frontier defense of the Ming Dynasty into 14 periods, discussing how the Ming emperors, officials, and generals thought, argued, and made decisions when dealing with the actual issue of frontier defense, and exploring how the Ming Dynasty ensured territorial integrity during its 276 years of rule. This book provides a unique perspective for examining the rise and fall of the Ming Dynasty, helping to fully understand the defense system of the northern border of the Ming Dynasty, help to understand the changing process of the military decision-making mechanism and military defense thought of the Ming Dynasty, and help to think about the influence of the northern border defense on the politics and economy of the Ming Dynasty.
About the author
Dows (1937-2020) graduated from Georgetown University in 1958 and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1968. He was professor of history and director of the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Kansas. His research interests are ideological history and political history of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. His representative works include The Four Seasons of Emperor Jiajing: Emperor and Chief Assistant, Re-Unification: War and Peace in the Early Song Dynasty, Conquerors and Scholars: An Overview of Political Development in the Late Yuan Dynasty, etc. He also participated in the writing of the Cambridge History of Western Xia Jin and Yuan Dynasty in Liao China in the late Yuan Dynasty.
Chen Jiazhen, a senior English translator, has a master's degree in history from Beijing Normal University and a Doctor's degree in history from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He is currently an associate professor at the Institute of Ancient Books of Law, China University of Political Science and Law. His research interests include the history of the legal system in the Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties.
