The Limits of Criticism [Book Introduction]

Why must the critic demystify and disenchantment literary works? Why do they believe that words are always hiding some truth, and that their task is to reveal what is unspoken or repressed? The Limits of Criticism is the representative work of Rita Filsky, the author of The Use of Literature and the Gender of Modernity, which challenges the dominant interpretative model in the field of literary research - criticism. From the perspectives of philosophy, politics, culture and other aspects, it explores the boundaries of criticism, reveals the blind spots of criticism, and leads readers to think deeply about the nature and significance of criticism. Inspire readers to explore more creative and diverse reading and critical practices.

Filsky regards "criticism" as a genre and a trend of thought. By tracing the common argumential mode of many thinkers and critics in classical literary theories, Filsky provides a new way for us to explore the relationship between artistic works and the social world. Filsky argues that criticism rules out many possible modes of reading and does not guarantee the production of rigorous or radical ideas. She suggests that literary scholars should experiment with what she calls "post-critical reading," no longer looking behind a text like a detective for hidden causes or motives, but rather putting themselves before the text and exploring the infinite possibilities it contains. In this book, Filsky is full of witty words, and shows the charm of excellent literary criticism for readers with exquisite arguments.
