"To You" content introduction

In 2019, Bernardine Evaristo won the Man Booker Prize, becoming the first black woman to win the prize in 50 years. This year, she turned 60. He has been creating for 40 years.

To You: A Manifesto is a bold, personal account of that journey. From a childhood of being racially abused by neighbors, priests, and even white family members, to the youth who painted their entire room blood red, stuffed their luggage into garbage bags, and constantly moved from temporary residence to temporary residence, from the poet who made a living by doing odd jobs and never published anything, to the first British black female theatre company, becoming a writer, theater producer, and activist... She has been rebelling against mainstream society, making writing a priority, and finally, she has built a room of her own. The author explores issues of race, class, gender, and aging from a powerful perspective through the experience of resistance as a mulatto and a woman at the bottom. The book is as much about life and the writing experience as it is about class, racism and sexism.

In short, this is both a brilliant memoir and an epic for women, especially marginalized groups and minorities, an ode to courage and determination, full of defiance, wildness, creativity and risk-taking that both empowers and shocks us.
