Introduction to the Art of Insects

Insects are very familiar animals, but also very mysterious animals. Many insects are beautiful in their own right, and they are far older than humans. They were the first animals to take to the skies (100 million years before pterosaurs), the first to form complex social structures, and the first to transform plants. The importance of insects goes far beyond pollination; they also play other roles in ecosystems. It's because of their co-evolution with plants that flowering plants spread everywhere. When bees and other pollinators disappear, the Earth's ecosystems fall apart. Just as grim is the fact that over the past few decades, the overall number of insects worldwide has declined by 70 to 80 percent, and the number of species has declined by about 30 percent.

The project, a collaboration between photographers and the American Museum of Natural History, records indelible images of 40 rare (endangered, extinct) species in the museum's collection, with specimens from a team of scientists from as many as 2,000

From a million insect specimens. They include familiar endangered species such as the monarch butterfly and the nine-star ladybird, as well as the remote island of Ao 䗛. It was thought that 䗛 had been extinct for most of the 20th century,

It was not until 2001 that the island was rediscovered 䗛 and bred in captivity.

The entire collection is sent to Biss's studio, where he creates stunning insect portraits that are enlarged to 300 times the size of real insects, revealing vivid life forms and color details that are invisible to our naked eyes. The book offers a glimpse into the visual impact, potential artistic and scientific significance of these tiny, unknown creatures.
