Born in Rochdale, a small working-class town in the north of England, where schools and industry are in decline, Mark's family and environment do not recognize the value of reading: Mark's prospects seem limited and hopeless. But books opened up a new world for him and set his life on a very different path.
In this book, he candidly shares his own story of growing up as a working-class child in the 1970s and 1980s, about the influences of school, music, books, authors, and environment on him, and how they shaped his life. In addition to telling the story of his lifelong love of books, Mark also shared how writing and reading have changed in the past 50 years, witnessing the great changes in society and the awakening of people's consciousness in the past 50 years.
