Content introduction
Jacob, an aristocratic young man, arrives one day as a boarder at the Banyamanta Servants' School in order to train himself to be a "seductious, round zero." His role model is his classmate Klaus, a perfect servant with no thoughts or desires of his own.
Mr. Banyamanta, the curmudgeonly principal, is a "giant" in the eyes of the students and a symbol of power. In the shadow of the great crisis facing the school, he comes to regard Jacob as his only friend. Eventually, the servants' school students left for their own lives. Mr. Banyamanta also manages to convince Jacob to leave school and join him in creating a new, braver life.
author
Robert Walser (April 15, 1878.-December 25, 1956) was a Swiss poet and novelist who was posthumously hailed as a genius. He held a variety of menial occupations - butler, clerk, assistant librarian and bookseller - and his life was marked by a sense of alienation and a longing for solitude. Jacob von Gunten, his most famous novel, defined his view of everyday life in Berlin. He moved to Berlin in 1905, returned to Beel in 1913 and continued to write, before being admitted to the Waldau psychiatric Hospital in Bern in 1929. In 1933, he was transferred to another psychiatric hospital in Herissau and stopped writing altogether. On Christmas Day 1956, he went out for his usual walk, and in the afternoon his children found his frozen body in the snow-covered snow.
