This is a socioeconomic monograph written by William G.Roy, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. This book is a historical survey of the rise of large industrial corporations in the United States, focusing on the development of political, social, and economic systems under the influence of large corporations. The book is divided into nine chapters. In the first half of the book, the author explores the public nature of the corporation, the ways in which public services are performed, and the process by which the corporation sprouted and developed its organizational form in the system of stock markets, brokerage houses, and investment banks. In the second half of the book, the author analyzes the significant impact of the manufacturing boom of large corporations on the American economic landscape in the early 20th century, and demonstrates the limitations of Chandler's efficiency theory. About the author
William G.Roy received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Michigan in 1977 and has been a professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles since 1976, where he studies large-scale economic transformations. In his sociological research, Roy has conducted a historical survey of the rise of large corporations in the United States, focusing on the associated political, social, and institutional evolution.
