　　沙培德（Peter Zarrow）美国康涅狄格大学历史系教授，哥伦比亚大学博士。主要研究领域为中国近代思想文化史、比较政治与政治史，对中国近代革命史、晚清至民国的知识与政治转型等问题有专精研究，在海内外中国史学界有广泛影响。著有《帝国之后：近代中国国家观念的转型（1885—1924）》《战争与革命交织的近代中国（1895—1949）》等。

　　刘芳北京师范大学历史学院副教授、硕士生导师，历史学博士后，北京大学和美国加州大学洛杉矶分校联合培养历史学博士。研究专长为中国近代政治外交史、中美关系史。近年来主持国家级和省部级课题两项，发表学术论文20余篇，著有《美国政府与庚子事变研究（1899—1901）》等。

Between 1885 and 1924, China experienced dramatic political and cultural changes, which were fundamentally caused by a change in people's thinking. This book traces the formation of the concept of the state in modern China, exploring why the Chinese people, who had experienced the rule of the monarch for more than two thousand years, no longer believed in the monarchy at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic, and how to build a new country on the new concept. Using a variety of historical sources, the author not only reviews the ideological evolution of major political thinkers and analyzes the ideas reflected in popular political culture, but also focuses on the process by which concepts such as "citizenship" and "sovereignty" were absorbed and improved in China, providing new explanations for the crucial transformation of China from an old dynasty to a modern state. It can also shed light on the classic topic of modern Chinese nationalism.

Methodologically, this book places the evolution of the concept of the state in modern China in the context of domestic political struggles and reactions to imperialism, delineates a clear context between radicalism and conservatism, and provides a useful exploration of cross-cultural knowledge exchange.



Peter Zarrow is a professor of history at the University of Connecticut and a PhD student at Columbia University. His main research fields are modern Chinese ideological and cultural history, comparative politics and political history, and he specializes in modern Chinese revolutionary history, knowledge and political transformation from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, and has extensive influence on Chinese historians at home and abroad. He is the author of After the Empire: The Transformation of the Concept of the State in Modern China (1885-1924) and the Interweaving of War and Revolution in Modern China (1895-1949).

About the Translator

Liu Fang is an associate professor and master tutor of the School of History of Beijing Normal University. She is a postdoctoral fellow in history. She is a doctor of History jointly trained by Peking University and UCLA. His research expertise is in the history of modern Chinese politics and diplomacy and the history of Sino-American relations. In recent years, he has presided over two national and provincial projects and published more than 20 academic papers, including A Study on the American Government and the Boxer Affair (1899-1901).
