Content introduction
A timely and visionary study of Britain's relations with France and Prussian Germany since the signing of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. The author believes that European integration has evolved from the diplomatic, economic and cultural ties among these three countries. As war became more destructive and economic expectations rose, these countries became desperate to survive on their own. Yet the three countries are rarely on good terms at the same time.
Although the whole of Europe seems to be a community, in fact, different cultural specificities still hinder the integration of European countries to some extent, so European integration has always been a dream. Against this backdrop, Brexit is predictable and manageable. After all, these federalist roots in the Holy Roman Empire are so strong that the European Union remains a powerful institution of 27 states. After Brexit, Britain will play an important role outside the EU, and the author sees such a "distance" that will highlight the pragmatism and historical stability of the European center.

Stuart Sweeney is a visiting fellow at the Centre for European History at the University of Oxford, UK, has taught at the University of Oxford and the Open University, and is the author of, among other books, Royal Indian Railway Finance.
