作者简介
尼尔·格罗斯（Neil Gross），1971年6月生，2002年获威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校博士学位。格罗斯曾于普林斯顿大学、不列颠哥伦比亚大学、哈佛大学和南加州大学任教，现为美国科尔比学院社会学教授、社会学系主任，主要研究领域包括社会学理论、政治学和警察学。曾在《美国社会学评论》《社会学年度评论》《社会学理论》等期刊上发表多篇文章。2008年，格罗斯出版了专著《理查德·罗蒂：一位美国哲人的诞生》，该书一经出版即引起广泛关注。哲学家巴里·艾伦（Barry Allen）指出，格罗斯通过梳理罗蒂的生平，“构建了一种观念社会学理论”。社会学家尼尔·麦克劳林（Neil Mclaughlin）高度评价了格罗斯“细致的档案研究、创新的理论综合及其巨大贡献”。
Content introduction
The book is divided into two main parts. The first eight chapters are the first part, which first introduces Rorty's experience in chronological order, including her parents' life experience and Rorty's own study experience. The last two chapters are the second part, which re-examines Rorty's thought and career development from the perspective of sociology. However, different from traditional biographies, Gross focuses more on the secular social and institutional environment than on the anecdotes of the life of the characters, and contrasts Rorty's thought process through the description of the environment in which he lives. Throughout the book, the author focuses on the first half of Rorty's career, the period of development of his ideas, rather than the period of dissemination. The goal of this book is not to provide an interpretation of Rorty's ideas or a critical philosophical examination of them, but to attempt to explain the social roots of his ideas and to provide a direction for future sociological research.
About the author
Neil Gross (born June 1971) received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002. Gross has taught at Princeton University, the University of British Columbia, Harvard University, and the University of Southern California, and is currently Professor of Sociology and chair of the Department of Sociology at Colby College, where his research interests include sociological theory, political science, and police science. He has published many articles in the American Sociological Review, Sociological Annual Review, Sociological Theory and other journals. In 2008, Gross published a book, Richard Rorty: The Making of an American Philosopher, which attracted widespread attention. The philosopher Barry Allen notes that Gross "constructed a sociological theory of ideas" by combing through Rorty's life. Sociologist Neil Mclaughlin praised Gross for his "meticulous archival research, innovative theoretical synthesis, and enormous contributions."
