Content introduction

This book includes Neruda's widely read love poem "Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair" and his "One Hundred Love Sonnets" dedicated to his lover Mathilde. This is not only his most famous work, but also the work that best reflects his unique style, but also the literary work that has a great influence on the world.

In the course of my long journey, I have found the necessary formula for writing poetry - a gift from the earth and the heart. I think poetry is a temporary, serious act. Loneliness and solidarity, emotion and behavior, individual difficulties, human feelings, and the implication of nature all unfold simultaneously in poetry. I am equally convinced that man and his shadow, man and his attitude, man and his poem-remain forever in an activity that constitutes our reality and our dreams, because in this way they are connected and fused together.

-- Pablo Neruda

Wonderful book review

Pablo Neruda is a twentieth-century poet in all languages. He writes great poems about everything, like King Midas, and everything he touches becomes poetry.

-- Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Nobel Prize winner

Neruda and Eliot were writing at the same time, but Neruda was writing in a rain-soaked place in southern Chile with no library. However, he was on the same wave as Eliot. It is these poets who maintain the language of novelists: without these poets, without Neruda, Vallejo, Paz, Dofro, Cabrera Mistral, there would be no Latin American novel at all.

- Carlos Fuentes (leader of the "Latin American literary Explosion", alongside Marquez, Llosa and Cortasar)

Pablo Neruda was a remarkable poet, a wonderful beloved character, and full of life

-- Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobel laureate in Literature

In the very beginning of my literary career, revelation was the poetry of Pablo Neruda. Neruda had a great influence on many poets. No doubt the same is true for me and my friends. When people talk about Neruda, they always talk about realism and surrealism. But this is not so accurate, rather he sees reality in a bizarre, fantastical and everyday way. There is both romance and humor in him, and this weird and passionate combination of his poetry is also Neruda's open and closed eyes. The eye of a dreamer. He sees reality with these eyes.

-- Octavio Paz, Nobel laureate in Literature

Neruda, in the Chinese literary world in the 1950s and 1960s, had a great influence. All of us who like poetry in college have read his long poem "Woodcutter, Wake up."

-- Hong Zicheng, literary historian

"Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair" can still be found in the tone of Reuven Dario's Spanish-American modernism, but it is a surprising combination of pure emotion and brutal carnal desire, the freshness of imagination, the impact of language are impressed by the reader. Despite controversy over the erotic content of some of the poems, the collection quickly spread and was translated into other languages. To date, the collection remains one of the best selling collections of Spanish poetry.

-- Poet Hu Xudong
