作者简介
查尔斯·欧曼（Charles Oman），英国著名军事历史学家。曾在牛津大学师从英国现代史大师威廉·斯塔布斯。1905年，继著名历史学家蒙塔古·布罗斯之后被选为牛津大学现代史希尔奇克教授，同年被选为不列颠学会会员。1917—1921年，担任皇家历史学会主席。在学术生涯中，他开创性地通过残缺凌乱的历史文献再现了中世纪时期的战役。一生著述颇丰，作品涵盖了从古代史到拿破仑时代军事史等多个领域，为后世历史学家广为借鉴。

In 476 AD, the Western Roman Empire fell and Europe's "Dark Ages" (the Middle Ages) were about to begin.
The Romans no longer ruled large tracts of land in the western Mediterranean, which fell into the hands of Vandals, Visigoths, Franks, and a host of other tribes whom the Romans had previously called "barbarians."
However, this era was not as dark as later depictions. After the fall of the Roman Empire, many changes were still taking place, and the influence of the Roman Empire continued in many ways.
The Eastern Roman Empire, centered in Constantinople, continued to flourish, not only inheriting in many respects the achievements of the Roman Empire since the time of Augustus, but also developing a new judicial system to govern its vast territory, while promoting new forms of art and architecture.
Even in the power vacuum after 476, Western Europe was not completely plunged into darkness; on the contrary, many new powerful empires emerged, the most famous of which was the Frankish Empire under Charlemagne.
From Theodoric the Great, who ruled Italy in the early 6th century, to Charles Marte at the Battle of Tours, to Pepin "El Chapo" and Louis "The Pious", this classic of the European Middle Ages features charismatic characters. About the author
Charles Oman is a famous British military historian. He studied at Oxford with William Stubbs, a master of modern English history. In 1905, following the famous historian Montague Bross, he was elected Professor of Modern Schilczyk at the University of Oxford, and in the same year was elected a Fellow of the British Society. He was President of the Royal Historical Society from 1917 to 1921. During his academic career, he pioneered the reconstruction of medieval battles through fragmentary and disorganized historical documents. He has written extensively throughout his life, covering many fields from ancient history to the military history of the Napoleonic era, which has been widely used for reference by later historians.
