1930年《中学生》杂志创刊，1931年起由叶圣陶担任主编。长久以来，《中学生》杂志是中学生的良师益友，帮助他们认清世界，认清自身肩负的责任，引导他们培养情操，塑造人格，从而振起民族精神。
20世纪60年代，叶圣陶将1930—1951年间他为《中学生》写的值得留存的文章抄录成册，命名为“自选文篇”。这些“自选文篇”内容涵盖中学生的生活、学习、人格、修养、交游等诸多放面，涉及国家的命运、民族的前途、教育的方式方法、传统与现代，以及青年的责任等众多话题，是蕴含综合性特征又个性鲜明的精品。这些“自选文篇”就像为严肃的课堂打开了一扇窗口，让世界的纷纭活跃与灿烂景致投射进来，经过时代淘洗，依然熠熠生辉，常读常新。
叶圣陶（1894—1988），原名叶绍钧，江苏苏州人，现代作家、教育家、文学出版家和社会活动家，有“优秀的语言艺术家”之称。新中国成立后历任教育部副部长、中央文史研究馆馆长等职。他为我国的教育事业倾注毕生精力，提出“教是为了达到不需要教”的教育主张，积极尝试教育改革，并在汉语语言规范化，提倡使用白话文、简化字等方面做出了重大贡献，堪称文化教育界“一代师表”。代表作有长篇小说《倪焕之》、童话故事《稻草人》、随笔《西川集》等。

In 1930, the magazine "Middle School Students" was founded, and Ye Shengtao was the chief editor since 1931. For a long time, "Middle School students" magazine is a good teacher and friend of middle school students, helping them to understand the world, recognize their own responsibilities, guide them to cultivate sentiments, shape personality, and thus arouse the national spirit.
In the 1960s, Ye Shengtao transcribed the articles he wrote for Middle School Students from 1930 to 1951 and named them "self-selected articles". The content of these "self-selected essays" covers the life, learning, personality, cultivation, social interaction and many other aspects of middle school students, involving the fate of the country, the future of the nation, the ways and methods of education, tradition and modernity, as well as the responsibilities of youth and many other topics, which contain comprehensive characteristics and distinct personalities. These "self-selected essays" are like opening a window for a serious class, allowing the world's lively and brilliant scenery to be projected in. After the washing of The Times, they are still shining and often read.
Ye Shengtao (1894-1988), originally named Ye Shaojun, was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. He is a modern writer, educator, literary publisher and social activist. He is known as "excellent language artist". After the founding of New China, he successively served as Vice Minister of Education and director of the Central Institute of Literature and History. He devoted his whole life to the cause of education in China, put forward the education idea that "teaching is to achieve no need to teach", actively tried to reform education, and made significant contributions to the standardization of the Chinese language, advocating the use of vernacular and simplified characters, and was called a "generation of teachers" in the cultural and educational circles. His representative works include the novel Ni Huanzhi, the fairy tale The Scarecrow, and the essay Xichuan Collection.
