克利福德·西马克（1904—1988），新闻工作者、著名科幻作家，1931年开始撰写科幻小说，曾多次获得雨果奖和星云奖，并于1977年获得由美国科幻奇幻作家协会颁发的大师奖，他也是继罗伯特·海因莱因、杰克·威廉森之后第三位获此殊荣的科幻大师。
西马克出生并成长于乡土气息浓郁的美国西部乡村，他的作品中也因此充满了田园诗意和乡村风光。他是公认的“田园科幻”流派的开创者和代表人物，也是科幻界最富有人道主义精神的作家之一。
《荒城》是西马克的重要代表作，于1953年获得国际幻想奖。

Clifford Simak (1904-1988) was a journalist and renowned science fiction writer who began writing science fiction in 1931 and won several Hugo and Nebula Awards, as well as the 1977 Master Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He is the third science fiction master to receive the award, after Robert Heinlein and Jack Williamson.
Simak was born and grew up in the rural western country of the United States, so his works are full of idyllic poetry and rural scenery. He is recognized as the pioneer and representative of the "pastoral science fiction" genre, and is also one of the most humane writers in science fiction.
The Desolate City is an important masterpiece of Simak and won the International Fantasy Award in 1953.
