历史地理学的研究，是要探索并解释历史时期地理环境的变迁、人与环境的互动关系、社会人文空间衍变的复杂过程。它将人的能力（理性的与感性的）与大地紧密结合起来，并展示人类历史行为的空间维度，这是观察世界的特殊视角，是理解历史的必要路径，这种视角与路径是不可替代的。
历史地理学作为学科的形成，是人类智识发展的必然成果。它以生存世界的丰富性为前提，揭示其间隐含的错综关系；它以人类的本质为旨要，论证文明的多维特征；它以理性反思为基础，为前瞻提供智慧。历史地理学所关注与叙述的知识类型、人文理念、地方习俗，乃是构成当下社会生活的重要元素，所以历史地理学离每个人都不远。
作者简介
唐晓峰，曾先后在北京大学历史系考古专业、北京大学地理系、美国雪城大学（Syracuse University）地理系学习，获得博士学位。现为北京大学城市与环境学院历史地理研究中心教授，主要研究领域有历史人文地理学、文化地理学、中国北方历史地理、北京城市历史地理、地理学思想史等。著有《从混沌到秩序:中国上古地理思想史述论》《新订人文地理随笔》《给孩子的历史地理》等。
Content introduction
The study of historical geography is to explore and explain the changes of geographical environment, the interaction between man and environment, and the complex process of the evolution of social and human space in historical periods. It closely integrates the human capacity (rational and emotional) with the earth and shows the spatial dimension of human historical behavior, which is a special perspective of the world and a necessary path to understanding history, and this perspective and path are irreplaceable.
The formation of historical geography as a discipline is the inevitable result of the development of human intelligence. It takes the richness of the living world as the premise and reveals the hidden interrelationships between them. It takes the essence of human beings as the purpose to demonstrate the multi-dimensional characteristics of civilization. It is based on rational reflection and provides wisdom for looking forward. The types of knowledge, humanistic ideas and local customs that historical geography focuses on and describes are important elements that constitute the current social life, so historical geography is not far from everyone.
About the author
Tang Xiaofeng has studied at the Department of History and Archaeology of Peking University, the Department of Geography of Peking University, and the Department of Geography of Syracuse University in the United States, and obtained a doctorate degree. He is currently a professor at the Center of Historical Geography, College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University. His research interests include historical and human geography, cultural geography, Historical geography of Northern China, historical geography of Beijing, and history of geographical thought. He is the author of "From Chaos to Order: An Introduction to the History of Ancient Chinese Geographical Thought", "New Essays on Human Geography" and "Historical Geography for Children".
