This book is a classic work of the history of science, written by Alexander Kovaley, founder of the History of Scientific Thought school. The book argues that in the 16th and 17th centuries, human thought underwent a profound revolution, which completely changed the framework and mode of our thinking, so that the ancient orderly, finite and closed world (cosmos) eventually became a uniform and infinite universe, and the world of values was completely separated from the world of facts. Modern science and philosophy are both the source and the result of this revolution, and the history of modern science and philosophy must be studied with reference to each other.
About the author
Alexandre Covare (1892-1964) was a Russian-born French philosopher and historian of science. In the history of science, Kovaley enjoys a position no less than that of George Sutton, the father of the history of science. Covaley's works and his lectures on the history of Science at Princeton Institute reveal a new method of research on the history of science, which is different from Sutton's encyclopedic synthesis, but presents the history of science as a whole with scientific thought as a clue, thus giving the study of the history of science a strong ideological charm. It attracted a large group of talented students who turned to the history of science and made it their life's work. The grand picture of the "scientific revolution" painted by Covalre and his school of the History of Scientific thought has deeply influenced and still strongly influences the general social audience. In other words, what is generally accepted by the social audience is the history of science in the style of Kovaley.
Translator Zhang Butian, an outstanding young translator, has translated nearly 40 books. My research direction is the history of scientific thought in the Western Middle Ages and early modern times. My research fields mainly focus on the origin of modern science and scientific revolution, with special attention to the origin of modernity, the relationship and interaction between science, philosophy and theology, and the influence of philosophy and theological trends in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance on the rise of modern science.
