Anne Elnor has been pushing the boundaries of what stories are worth telling and what themes are worth exploring. In this book, she sets her sights on hypermarkets and supermarkets. It is a ubiquitous feature of modern life, but one that has received little attention in literature.
For more than a year, Herno documented her visit to Auchan, a large supermarket chain in the suburbs of Paris. In her view, the supermarket is "a place of great human gathering, a real human landscape." Capital production, cultural production, and class stratification converge here and dominate our desires. With her merciless, sharp observations, Erno surveys this place we think we know, calling for a search for the everyday we ignore and a deeper look at the ordinary.
