南唐是五代十国时期割据江淮的一个小王朝，尽管存续仅有39年，但是在其统治之下，江淮地区政治、经济、文化获得了长足的进步，不仅对当时中国的分合大势，而且对宋代以后中国历史的发展产生了巨大的影响。
本书共分三编，上编主要论述南唐的崛起，从吴唐禅代及烈祖李昪的政治改革、经济举措、文化政策、军事外交策略等方面，深入分析南唐政权建立并迅速发展强盛，在五代十国时期南北对峙局面中举足轻重的历程。中编主要探讨南唐的衰落，从嗣位之争及元宗李璟时期的政治局势混乱、军事外交失利、经济状况恶化等角度，全面考察南唐政权由盛转衰成为中原政权附庸的过程。下编主要考察南唐的灭亡，从后主李煜品性才艺、应付危局的措施及金陵之战等方面，考论南唐衰败颓势无法挽救，终被北宋灭亡的历史。
History of Southern Tang Dynasty
The Southern Tang Dynasty was a small dynasty that divided Jianghuai during the period of Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. Although it lasted only 39 years, under its rule, the politics, economy and culture of the Jianghuai region made great progress, which not only had a great impact on the general trend of the division and integration of China at that time, but also had a great impact on the development of Chinese history after the Song Dynasty.
This book is divided into three parts. The first part mainly discusses the rise of the Southern Tang Dynasty. From the aspects of the political reform, economic measures, cultural policies, military and diplomatic strategies of the Wu, Tang and Chan Dynasties and the great grandfather Li 昪, the establishment and rapid development of the Southern Tang regime plays an important role in the confrontation between the North and the South during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. The middle book mainly discusses the decline of the Southern Tang Dynasty, and comprehensively examines the process of the Southern Tang regime's transition from prosperity to decline to vassal state of the Central Plains from the perspectives of the settlement dispute, the political chaos, the failure of military diplomacy and the deterioration of economic conditions in the period of Li Jing of the Yuan Dynasty. The second part mainly investigates the collapse of the Southern Tang Dynasty, from the aspects of the character and talent of the late master Li Yu, the measures to deal with the crisis and the Battle of Jinling, etc., the history of the decline and decline of the Southern Tang Dynasty could not be saved and was eventually destroyed by the Northern Song Dynasty.
