Based on in-depth interviews with 30 working mothers and 50 child caregivers, anthropologist MacDonald explores surrogate motherhood by cutting paid child care to the heart of contemporary family life. About the author
Cameron Lynne Macdonald, who taught in the Department of Sociology at Harvard University and then at the Department of Sociology at Wisconsin-Madison, is the editor of Service Work:Critical Perspective, among other books. Her interest in the mother-nanny relationship stems from her own fieldwork as a nanny and her concern about the intense stress that contemporary competitive parenting culture places on mothers and childcare workers.
