The Rainbow is Lawrence's longest novel, full of poetry and deep symbolic significance. Some critics believe that The Rainbow and Women in Love represent the highest achievements of Lawrence's literary creation. The book was banned as soon as it was published on charges of "indecency"; Just at the time of the First World War, Britain declared war on Germany, because the Rainbow clearly condemned the war, Lawrence married the German daughter-in-law was accused of being a spy, and was ordered to leave the country, Lawrence began to wander abroad. It was not until 1920 that The Rainbow was published in the United Kingdom in excerpted form, and for the first time in full in 1949. Because of its rich and profound ideological content, epic images, and pioneering exploration of sexual relations, The Rainbow has been recognized as a classic work of modernist fiction.
About the author
David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was a poet, novelist, and one of the most controversial writers of the 20th century. He was born in Nottingham, England, to an illiterate miner father and a petty-bourgeois mother whose differing values led to a dysfunctional marriage. The abnormal family relationship directly led to Lawrence's "Oedipus complex", which affected his concept of marriage, family and sexual love, but he also held a unique observation perspective on the relationship between man and man, man and society, man and nature in literary creation, and wrote a number of shocking works. He lived in exile in Germany, France, Italy, Sri Lanka, Australia, the United States, Mexico, and finally died in France. Lawrence advocated human freedom and harmonious sexual relations, and opposed the destruction of nature by industrial civilization. He is best known for his early work Sons and Lovers (1913), and the trilogy The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1921) and Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928).
