The Long August is the first definitive history of one of the world's longest-running and most intractable conflicts.

The partition of British India into independent Pakistan and India in August 1947 coincided with mass killings of Hindus and Sikhs on one side and Muslims on the other, in which more than 750,000 people were massacred and 12 million fled their homes to seek refuge across the new border. That August, however, still seems to be going on.

In The Long August, renowned historian Dilip Shiro offers a fascinating account of India-Pakistan relations, tracing the milestones that divided the subcontinent and the evolution of contentious relations between Hindus and Muslims. To this day, a reasonable settlement of the dispute remains elusive, and the Line of Control in Kashmir remains the most heavily fortified border in the world.

Since partition, there have been several serious crises between India and Pakistan, including East Pakistan's declaration of independence in 1971 and the formation of Bangladesh; And the acquisition of nuclear weapons by both India and Pakistan, leading to almost inevitable confrontations in 1999 and 2002.
