Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956)

German playwright, theatre theorist, director, and poet. Born in Augsburg, he lived in exile in continental Europe after 1933, leaving for the United States in 1941 and returning to Europe in 1947. In 1949, he settled in East Berlin and founded the Berlin Theatre Company. He was Vice president of the Academy of Arts of the German Democratic Republic and was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1955.
