Content introduction

A trip along the Po Plain with photographer Luigi Giri in the early 1980s inspired Chellatti's writing, in which the author gathers and retells listened stories with the eye of an archaeologist, like Morandi's still life, focused on discovering the everyday strangeness rather than the grand landscape. In the words of John Berger, it is filled with "the solitude of the sunlight reflecting between the buildings."

This book is not a collection of short works in the ordinary sense, but a complete picture composed of 30 short stories.

Wonderful book review

In these stories, we will read of kind but unconventional thinkers, of melancholy but well-versed in life, of philosophers with obscure ideas. These wonderful adventures take place in everyday life and are both enjoyable and often shocking to read. -- Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

Italian writer Gianni Ceratti is an excellent humorist. His cool humor, almost indistinguishable from seriousness, is all the more subversive. His succinct, sometimes allegorical stories are folkloric and claim to be true, but their secret charm is that they might as well be pure fiction. -- German weekly Die Zeit

The stories told by Ceratti contain fragments of individual and collective memory that take us on a journey to rediscover oral traditions. Thirty stories, funny or weird, sad or even scary, are like an old photo album, each page opening a twist on reality. -- Flamalion Press

[In Italian literature since the 1960s,] a place must be reserved for Gianni Ceratti, both as a writer and as a theorist. -- Italo Calvino

Whoever talks about the Po River will talk about the fog. It was part of Po's character, like the smell of her skin. The Po River is the first [...] Installed radar on the river, because she heavy fog lock. The dense fog that inundate the whole plain of the Po River creates a certain atmosphere and tension that writers such as Cerati and earlier Pavese have successfully described. -- John Berg

Ceratti always listens before he tells, and to me that's the beautiful quality of a storyteller: knowing how to listen to the world. -- Antonio Tabucci

At the heart of this book lies not only the reproduction of the visible world, but also the acceptance of everyday landscapes least likely to excite the imagination. -- Italo Calvino
