Through 18 months of field research, 9 years of tracking, and in-depth communication with more than 400 unemployed people in high-tech industries, anthropologist Carrie Lane deeply presents the experience of this group of unemployed people, and excavates the survival philosophy behind this group - "one-man company" : Under elitism and neoliberalism, white-collar workers rarely blame their unemployment on "the system" or their employers, preferring instead to blame themselves or to see unemployment as an inevitable consequence of business cycles and competition in a global economy. As a result, all work becomes temporary, there is no professional loyalty, individuals take responsibility for their own career, do their own logistics and finances, promote themselves as a commodity, and operate as a "one-man company."
They carefully run their own one-man company. However, when the bubble bursts, will everything be placed on their own efforts, or the only way out?
