Content introduction
This book reexamines Roman history from the perspective of barbarians as seen by the Romans. From the small refugee villages on the Apennines Peninsula, to the empires across Europe and Asia, to the collapse of Western Rome in the 5th century, Rome has always faced threats from barbarians in the process of rise, strength and decline, whether it is the resistance of neighboring nations to conquest, or the rebellion of internal slaves against the rule, which is like a haunting nightmare of Rome. In this sense, the history of Rome can even be seen as a history of confrontation with the barbarians. But are barbarians really all uncivilized barbarians? Were they all a negative influence on Rome? What would Rome be without them?
The book is divided into 24 chapters, each featuring a barbarian leader who led the rebellion against Rome, from Brennus the Gaul, who sacked Roman territory, to Hanni, who hated the Republic; From Viryatus, a shepherd in Iberia, to Juguda, who worked to liberate Africa; From Spartacus, the slave leader, to Cleopatra; From Alaric the "looter of Rome" to Attila the "Whip of God"... Drawing on historical and archaeological evidence, the author guides readers through their personalities, fates, successes and failures, while revisiting the rise and fall of Rome from a new perspective.
