"Public health saved your life today, you just didn't know it." This is a phrase Dr. Wen Linyan likes to say. The reason you don't know is because good public health is invisible. It only manifests itself when it is neglected and underfunded, and this harsh truth has become more evident than ever in the devastation of COVID-19.

Wen Linyan has been on the front lines of public health, leading the fight against the opioid epidemic, infectious disease outbreaks, rising maternal and infant mortality, and disinformation in outbreaks. Drawing on her profound experience, Wen details how public health uniquely encompasses science, advocacy, medicine, and politics, how it plays a key role in protecting vulnerable populations and keeping communities safe, and its innovative approaches to addressing social problems, such as treating gun violence as an infectious disease and racism as a health threat.

Wen Linyan's own story is that of a unique American immigrant: she and her family were once on food stamps and sometimes homeless. She went to college at 13, graduated from medical school, worked in an emergency room, won a Rhodes Scholarship, and turned to a career in public health.

Offering a gripping story and unparalleled authority, Lifeline is an uplifting memoir, a window into the inner workings of public health, and a recognition that health for all is a fundamental right.
