Classical period: Birth of the Roman Empire
In the 2nd century BC, the Romans began to rise from Italy. After three Punic Wars and four Macedonian Wars, Rome annexed Carthage, conquered Greece, and gradually unified the Italian Peninsula and the Po Plain, becoming a powerful empire across Asia, Europe and Africa, and Italy became the core region of the Roman Empire.
Middle Ages: Birth of the Renaissance
In the 14th century, when the whole of Europe was still immersed in the dark Middle Ages, there were a lot of talents in Italy, and the stars shone: Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, breaking through the feudal, conservative and repressive theocracy of the time. Subsequently, this trend of thought formed a grand and spectacular Renaissance movement that influenced Europe.
Modern times: step by step to decline
Since modern times, class contradictions in Italy have gradually intensified, and national sentiments are rising day by day. Under the control of Mussolini, fascism was in power and led Italy to the road of foreign wars. At the same time, Italy is Mired in a fiscal crisis, with domestic inflation, soaring prices, financial chaos, financial collapse, and mounting debt.

He is a scholar of the British National Academy, one of the founders of St Catherine's College, Oxford, and was formerly Vice-Master of St Catherine's College, Oxford, and Professor of Medieval History at the University of Oxford.
George Holmes was awarded the Serena Medal by the British National Academy in 1993 for his outstanding contributions to the study of Italian history. His other books include the Late Middle Ages, The Florentine Enlightenment: 1400-1450, Europe: Hierarchies and Insurrections, Art and Politics in the Italian Renaissance, and the Renaissance.
