One day in late 2000, 29-year-old Elon Musk and his friend Adeo Naishi were talking about starting a business and said that he had always been interested in space. That night he scoured NASA's website and found that the US space industry had done nothing since the Apollo moon landings. Musk decided to bring a breakthrough to the industry - he wanted to go to Mars, and he started by building rockets.
On May 6, 2002, SpaceX was founded. Musk has invested $100 million to support three rocket launches. "We are looking for talent from around the world to tackle challenging projects and ultimately achieve our goal of becoming a trans-planetary species," the company website says. No one in the industry was optimistic, and even the first few executives who joined the team didn't really believe Musk could build a rocket.
On August 3, 2008, the third launch failed and funding ran out. It was at that moment that Marsink and his team assembled the last rocket from the few remaining parts for the fourth launch.
All members of the SpaceX team are focused on a common goal. They joined Musk's team to join his seemingly insane plan to colonize Mars, and finally took this important step - on September 28, 2008, the Falcon 1 rocket was successfully launched.

Eric Berger is a veteran journalist who covers the space industry and has interviewed many of the industry's biggest names, including NASA, as well as key figures such as Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin. He received the National Space Society's Space Pioneer Award and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Covering SpaceX since 2015, Musk personally authorized the company to interview all key employees in order to obtain a large amount of first-hand information to write "Dash to Mars."
