A brief introduction to the Great Grouse
The Great Grouse is a collection of 14 of Tournier's best short stories, which include reinterpretations of classic literature or myths, humorous depictions of real life, and bizarre explorations of human nature or society.
He hides the profound philosophical implication in a plain daily life scene, creating a marvelous reading experience: a child's first adventure, a strange girl's death exploration, a secret desire of a marginal character, a love story on the side of the highway...
In Tournier's literary world, life seems ordinary, but it is full of surprises.
About the author
Michel Tournier
MichelTournier (1924-2016)
The representative of the French literary circle in the second half of the 20th century, the outstanding writer of the French New Fables, was a member of the Academy of Goncourt.
After graduating from the Sorbonne in Paris with a degree in literature and law, Tournier studied philosophy at the University of Tubingen in Germany. He injected philosophical speculation into literary creation, and his works often combined the romantic and unrestrained of French style with the profound and rational of German style, so he was praised as a "philosopher writer".
Tournier's debut novel, Friday: A Liber in the Pacific, won the French Prize for Fiction, while his second novel, King Alder, won the Prix Goncourt in an unprecedented unanimous vote. The Great Grouse is a collection of 14 of Tournier's best short stories, each a fantastic story, full of imagination, humor and deep moral. In this book, Tournier shows his unique insights and creativity on fairy tales, history, philosophy, art, mythology and other themes, so that we can find the wonder of life in the ordinary life.
When Tournier died in 2016, the then French President Francois Hollande paid tribute to him, describing him as a great writer with boundless talent.
