The Story of the Sea and the Earth
Farmers, weavers, blacksmiths, actors, temple apprentices, students, lawyers, thieves, sons of officials, mechanics, rice growers, road builders... Their names are the same, their faces are the same, their deaths are the same.
People who haven't experienced it can't relate to it. They cannot understand how the fear of death grips us by the throat. They cannot imagine the ways in which pain envelops our lives. They cannot understand how our fates are manipulated.
A collection of short stories and narrative essays by Alvaro Mutis, a Colombian writer and poet, published since 1960.
Prison records, tropical Gothic stories, history and legends, remnants of the burned works, the unfinished story of Makhlol... In these short narratives, Mutis writes about human suffering, solidarity, injustice, and the people and things that are lost in history and cannot be illuminated.
