Introduction to the Cambridge History of Roman Knighthood
The book depicts the various knights of the Roman world from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. Beginning with the chivalrous nobility of the royal age and the cavalry of the early Republic, it was not until the end of the second century BC that this class became a group within the Roman state distinct from the senators and commoners.
In republican times, knights had symbols of identity, rituals with religious and political connotations, and privileges such as front-row seats in the theater. Under the imperial system, the ranks of knights included governors, financial administrators, and other officials, and Augustus and his successors involved them in the administration of the state along with the Senators.
For more than a thousand years of Roman history, knights have played an important role in Roman government, army and society as cavalry, officers, merchants, tax payers, jurors, administrators and writers.
It is the first comprehensive history of chivalry, an institutional and social history of chivalry in the Roman world, showing how Roman cavalry became knighthood in the Republican era, how imperial rule changed the role of knights in government, and how knighthood played a vital social function in the Roman world. And how changes in the Roman state itself determined this.
About the author
Kellan Davenport is a senior lecturer in Roman history at Macquarie University, Australia. Educated at the University of Queensland and the University of Oxford, he was a Junior Fellow of the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies, a Roman Studies Fellowship from the British Academy in Rome, and a recipient of the Australian Research Council Discovery Young Researcher Fellowship (DECRA).
