Introduction to the Battle of Arnhem
Operation Market Garden, from September 17 to 26, 1944, was another major operation launched by the Allies in Western Europe after the Normandy landings in the latter part of World War II. It was the largest airborne combat operation in human history, and the Battle of Arnhem eventually became the key battle of this operation. The operation mobilized the Allied 1st Airborne Army, including the U.S. 101st Airborne Division and the 82nd Airborne Division, as well as the British 1st Airborne Division and the Polish 1st Independent Paratrooper Brigade, and the British 30th Corps of the 2nd Army cooperated on the ground to defeat the Germans and end the war as soon as possible. Military historian Anthony Beevor paints a grand picture of the operation from the small. Optimism in the upper echelons of the Allies, infighting among commanders and a balanced strategy of joint Anglo-American operations made this gambler's military adventure possible. About the author
Anthony Beevor is a British historian and bestselling author on history. He studied at the University of Winchester and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst before serving five years with the Army in England and Germany. He has published many popular works. Beevor was awarded a Knight in Arts and Letters by the French government, an honorary doctorate from the University of Kent, and a visiting scholar in history, Classics and archaeology at Beckett College, University of London. Shi Di, graduated from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Doctor of Engineering, military history enthusiast.
