Introduction to the Economic History of the Industrial Revolution Retold

This book presents readers with the latest research on the Industrial Revolution and points the way for future research.

The Industrial Revolution has always been central to the teaching of economic history, and is the historical key to the expansion of commerce in Western Europe, the rise of the factory, the production of coal and iron, the proletarianization of labor, the birth and global spread of industrial capitalism. In recent years, however, perceptions of the Industrial Revolution have changed dramatically.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, combining studies of consumption, material culture, technology, and cultural history, the book explains the Industrial Revolution from a broader global perspective, based on the global interactions that made technological innovation and knowledge dissemination possible. Through this new perspective, we can clearly see that the process of industrialization actually began earlier and lasted longer than previously understood.

By reflecting on the major concerns of economic historians of the past generation, this book presents readers with the latest research on the Industrial Revolution and points the way for future research.

Did the Industrial Revolution really exist, what did people think of it at the time, and how did an economy get out of the Malthusian trap and start growing in the modern sense? The Industrial Revolution was not an event that had no clear starting point, but in the 100 years from the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century, the cotton textile industry, the steel industry, and the transportation industry made rapid progress, and the socio-economic system, the social organization mode, and the ideology were also completely changed. These changes may not have been dramatic, but looking back a hundred years later, the world looks very different. The Industrial Revolution was not just the age of steam, cotton or steel. It was a truly progressive era. Through the research of four historians, The Economic History of the Industrial Revolution Retold reflects the field of economic history that renowned global historian Maxine Berg has focused on throughout her 40-year career, helping readers understand what accelerated the Industrial Revolution and what made Britain 'win the world'.

How does an economy get out of the Malthusian trap and start growing in the modern sense?
