Introduction to Seed Empire
Winner of the J. Anthony Lucas Award for American nonfiction writing and the International Association of Culinary Professionals Book Award for Food Issues
Focusing on the history of the global agricultural giant Monsanto, it shows the full penetration of chemicals into the global food supply system and reveals the complex and profound impact of chemical companies' use of technology on human food
MonsantoCompany is an American multinational agricultural company, which began in the early 20th century with the production of saccharin and caffeine, then entered agriculture, became a major manufacturer of herbicides, and gradually grew into the world's largest producer of genetically modified seeds in the 21st century. The future of human food is very much tied to the history of this company. What does all this mean for us?
Through fieldwork around the world, interviews with farmers, chemists, entrepreneurs, workers, patients, lawyers and judges, and a search of corporate and government records that have not yet been disclosed, historian Elmore traces Monsanto's staggering business expansion, revealing how its chemicals and genetically modified technologies infiltrated nearly every nook and crannies of the global food supply.
