《清季上海的美国人》内容简介
1898年，列强掀起瓜分中国狂潮，美国政府亦欲染指远东。上海美侨向来希望政府对其在华利益实施有力保护，至此更是加紧游说，亟欲华府转变其消极的对华政策。就这样，一批寓居上海的美国著名商人与传教士，在美国政府的“门户开放”政策出台前夕，联合创办了美国中华协会。上海美侨将该会定位为在商业利益主导下，同时兼顾传教利益和美侨安全的侨民组织，并邀集中国其他地区的美侨参与其中。因该会成立于戊戌政变之后，未几又遭逢己亥建储与庚子事变，所以在上述中外关系持续紧张的背景下，该会对庚子前后的中国事务做出异常活跃的因应。复因决策多出自寓沪美侨之手，所以该会在庚子前后的活动可被视为上海美国人在清季的大联合。本书以美华协会最为活跃的1898—1905年的活动为切入点，力图通过尽量搜集、比对各种不同类型的历史资料和既有研究，回溯上海美商与教士之间的分合以及他们依托美华协会对清季几大政治事件的因应，比较深入、具体地探讨上述两群体联合的基础与条件，联合的具体实践，以及联合所产生的历史影响。

"Americans in Shanghai in Qing Season" content introduction
In 1898, the Great powers set off a frenzy to divide China, and the United States government also wanted to get its hands on the Far East. American expatriates in Shanghai, who have long hoped for strong government protection of their interests in China, have stepped up their lobbying to change Washington's negative China policy. In this way, a group of prominent American businessmen and missionaries living in Shanghai co-founded the American Chinese Association on the eve of the US government's "open door" policy. The Shanghai American Community positioned the association as an expatriate organization with commercial interests at the same time as missionary interests and the safety of American citizens, and invited American citizens from other parts of China to participate. Since the association was founded after the Wuxu Coup, it suffered from the Jihai Construction and Reserve and the Gengzi Incident soon after, so in the background of the continuous tension between China and foreign countries, the association made an unusually active response to the Chinese affairs around the Gengzi. Since most of the decisions came from the hands of overseas Americans living in Shanghai, the activities of the association around the Boxer can be regarded as the great union of Shanghai Americans in the Qing season. This book takes the most active activities of the American Chinese Society from 1898 to 1905 as a starting point, and attempts to explore the basis and conditions for the union of the two groups by collecting and comparing various types of historical data and existing research as far as possible, recalling the disassociation between the American merchants and the priests in Shanghai and their response to several major political events in the Qing Dynasty with the help of the American Chinese Society. Huiying Wang, Ph.D., is an assistant researcher at the Institute of Historical Theory, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Her research interests include the history of Sino-American relations and the political history of the late Qing Dynasty.
