《重建》内容简介

A brief introduction to Reconstruction

When the American Civil War ended in 1865, with 750,000 northern and Southern soldiers killed, Americans were faced with the challenge of repairing the wounds of war, resolving regional animosities, and rebuilding the Union. The greatest challenge was how to create a new system of free labor out of the ruins of slavery, how to turn four million slaves into politically entitled, economically independent citizens, and how to put into practice the new constitutional principles of universal liberty, racial equality, and interracial democracy. The story of reconstruction revolves around these challenges, with intricate twists and turns, as history and the future clash, ideals and reality compete at this moment.

Historians have debated the writing of reconstruction history for more than a century, and it is extremely difficult to break through the old rules. About the author

EricFoner (1943 -), one of the most influential contemporary American historians, is the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History (emeritus) at Columbia University, and served as President of the Organization of American Historians (1993) and President of the American Historical Association (2000). In the American Civil War and reconstruction history, the history of slavery, the history of American politics and culture and other fields, he has made great achievements and written a lot. His books include Free Land, Free Labor, Free Men: The Ideology of the Republican Party Before the Civil War, Paine and Revolutionary America, Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877, The Story of American Freedom, Trial by Fire: Abraham Lincoln and Slavery in the United States, and The Road to Freedom.
