Restoration 【 Content Introduction 】
The Restoration: Charles II and His Kingdom, 1660-1685 is the first of Tim Harris's "Stuart trilogy", which depicts a period of extraordinary unrest in England at the end of the 17th century. After the civil war, the execution of Charles I, and Cromwell's republicanism, the return of Charles II, while initially welcomed by almost all groups, only temporarily masked the enduring divisions in Britain along ideological, geographical, and religious lines, so that the apparent stability was merely awaiting fission.
In this book, Harris breaks with the common image of Restoration England as a country freed from Puritan puritanism by a philandering monarch, and reconstructs the social tragedy of Restoration: two decades of civil war and republican rule were followed by tortures under the control of a brutal regime.
