Asians in Classical Music
As a Japanese-American scholar, Shini Yoshihara, faced with the reality of the increasing attention and influence of Asian classical musicians in the Western world, started this ethnographic study of "self as a method" from her own experience of classical music training and her own Asian identity. Based on interviews with more than 70 Asian musicians, this book explores the history, culture, and nature of the art form of classical music spread in Asia, and examines the role that Asian musicians play in the white-dominated world of classical music, and how their racial, gender, and class identities influence their professional experiences, development, and achievements.
