林德尔·戈登通过伍尔夫的小说作品以及日记和书信重构出这样一个伍尔夫：她是强健的步行爱好者，努力工作的职业作家，更是“不知疲倦的探索者”，探索“人类处境的千奇百怪”。
林德尔·戈登想要呈现的并非常规的线性传记叙事，而是在真实性所能允许的范围内，尽可能详尽地追踪记忆和想象在伍尔夫一生中的持续流动。戈登同时论证了这种传记方法正是伍尔夫的发明，也曾由她实践，背后是一种全新的重视无名者的历史观。
原书最初出版于1984年，2006年戈登在新材料的基础上，从新世纪的女性主义视角做了修订。中译本译自2006年修订版。

林德尔·戈登（LyndallGordon），1941年生于南非开普敦，美国哥伦比亚大学文学博士，以罗德学者身份前往牛津大学，现为牛津大学圣希尔达学院资深研究员。著有《T.S.艾略特传：不完美的一生》《破局者：改变世界的五位女作家》《夏洛蒂·勃朗特传》。

Introduction to the Biography of Virginia Woolf
Lyndell Gordon reconstructs Woolf through her novels, diaries and letters as an avid walker, a hard-working professional writer, and an "indefatigable explorer" of "the strangeness of the human condition."
What Lyndell Gordon wants to present is not a conventional linear biographical narrative, but rather a continuous flow of memory and imagination through Woolf's life, traced in as much detail as authenticity allows. Gordon also argues that this method of biography was invented and practiced by Woolf, and that it was behind a new view of history that valued the unknown.
Originally published in 1984, the book was revised in 2006 by Gordon, based on new material and a feminist perspective from the New Century. The Chinese version is from the 2006 revision.
About the author
Lyndell Gordon (born 1941 in Cape Town, South Africa), PhD in literature from Columbia University, went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and is now a senior research Fellow at St. Hilda's College, Oxford. He is the author of T.S. Eliot: An Imperfect Life, Game Breakers: Five Women Writers Who Changed the World, and Charlotte Bronte.
Xie Yaqing is a lecturer in the Department of English at the School of Foreign Languages and Literature, Beijing Normal University. She has a PhD in English Language and Literature from the University of Nottingham and Beijing Foreign Studies University.
