A brief introduction to the Time of Etiquette and Custom
The purpose of this book is to discover how the Chinese family can be maintained and continued under the double changes of institutional environment and private life in the time of social transformation. With the evolution of Chinese family studies from classic to modern, scholars break away from the traditional and modern defense of family studies in the past, and rely on generative narrative methods to analyze the intimate relationship and life strategies in the family. This book restores the birth and rearing styles of Beijing families in the 1930s and 1980s, and combined with the author's field investigation in this area from 2016 to 2019, it explains the changes in etiquette and customs experienced by families in different social transitions from three aspects: parenting, family planning process, and nursing ethics. The book argues that behind the transformation of the birth and rearing process in Chinese families is the moral mechanism of asceticism and hedonism in their confrontation with each other. Through cross-period historical research, it can be found that the power to maintain family life is not a simple governance logic or market mechanism, but a process of shaping and reconstructing moral legitimacy.
