　　简·莫里斯（Jan Morris,1926—2020），原名詹姆斯·莫里斯，英国作家、历史学家、旅行文学作家。第二次世界大战期间在英军服役，曾被派驻的里雅斯特。在20世纪50年代，先后在《泰晤士报》和《卫报》担任记者，前往世界各地报道诸多重大历史事件，包括1953年的人类首次登顶珠峰、1956年的苏伊士运河危机以及1961年的艾希曼审判等。由于出色的海外报道，他曾荣获1960年的乔治·波尔克新闻奖。

　　从60年代中期起，他成为自由撰稿人，行走世界，并开始从男性到女性的转变。他最终在1972年接受变性手术，并将“詹姆斯”改名为“简”。

　　在长达半个多世纪的写作生涯中，她出版了四十多部作品，包括多部有关大英帝国兴衰的历史著作、多部虚构小说、多部回忆录，以及众多旅行文学作品和散文集。凭借其敏锐的洞察和广博的历史素养，中东、远东、欧洲、美洲、非洲、澳洲等地的历史和现实、世情和人心都在她的笔下凝结成永恒的瞬间。

A brief introduction to the World

Jane Morris, a British national treasure writer and historian, has written a fascinating cultural essay through her global journey from the 1950s to the early 20th century. In five decades of change, Morris has witnessed one important moment after another in history, from the first summit of Mount Everest, to the Eichmann trial and the fall of the Berlin Wall, to the return of Hong Kong. Fifty years of life course, Morris from "he" to "she", from a journalist to a literary writer, in the dual identity change, she has always been sensitive to watch the world. Though the journey passes quickly, she uses the eyes of a historian to connect the past through the present and imagine the future. A troubled Middle East, a chaotic Caribbean, a Cold War Soviet Union, a divided South Africa, a fading British empire, a fluid Europe... In the midst of historical change, she captures the decisive details of the second half of the 20th century as the world changed dramatically.

About the author

Jan Morris (1926-2020), born James Morris, was an English writer, historian, and travel writer. He served in the British Army during World War II and was stationed in Trieste. In the 1950s, he worked as a reporter for The Times and then the Guardian, travelling around the world to cover major historical events, including the first summit of Mount Everest in 1953, the Suez crisis in 1956 and the Eichmann trial in 1961. For outstanding overseas reporting, he was awarded the George Polk Award for Journalism in 1960.

From the mid-60s, he worked as a freelance writer, walked the world, and began his transition from male to female. He finally underwent sex reassignment surgery in 1972 and changed his name from "James" to "Jane."

In a career that spanned more than half a century, she published more than 40 works, including historical works on the rise and fall of the British Empire, fiction novels, memoirs, and numerous works of travel literature and essays. With her keen insight and extensive historical literacy, the history and reality of the Middle East, the Far East, Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and other places, the world and the human heart are condensed into eternal moments in her pen.

For her outstanding contribution to travel writing, she was awarded the Thomas Cook Prize for Travel Literature in 2004 and the Edward Stanford Award for Outstanding Contribution to Travel Writing in 2018. She was awarded the Golden Pen Award for Lifetime Literary Achievement by English Pen in 2005, and in January 2008, was ranked 15th on The Times' list of the "Top 50 British Writers since 1945".

She died at her home in Wales on November 20, 2020 at the age of 94.
